What's Dyngus Day?
Dyngus Day (Polish: Śmigus-dyngus) is a celebration held on Easter Monday throughout parts of Europe. The tradition of Dyngus Day is mostly associated with Poland and is celebrated by the Polish immigrant community, especially by Polish-Americans in the United States.
The origin of Dyngus Day is not clearly known, and it is widely believed to be dated back to pagan times before 1000AD. Modern takes on traditions of the holiday include boys using water guns at girls or spanking them with pussy willow branches.
Western New York is considered by many as the "Dyngus Day Capital of the World," due to the large amount of Polish Immigrants that migrated to the region in the 20th Century and still observes the holiday annually.
North Tonawanda is no different, and thanks to the newly established North Tonawanada Neighborhood Watch's Dyngus Day Parade, NT continues to partake in the fun in an exciting way both Poles and Non-Poles to celebrate and enjoy the strong and important Polish heritage, cultural & historical contributions to society.
